Do unallocated tent pitches have fire pits?2020-08-15T00:38:47+00:00

Yes our fire pits are moveable so you look for an unused one (often placed at the edges of the fields) and move it to your pitch.  We do not charge for their use but it is a condition of using them that you purchase the wood from us.

Can I launch my own boat or board in the lake when camping?2021-01-23T08:30:51+00:00

Yes if you are camping with us you can bring a small boat and launch it in the lake at no charge. If you are just visiting however and not camping, please launch your boat at the laybys.

Can I inflate an airbed at the campsite?2020-08-14T09:43:26+00:00

Yes we have power points you can use, but bring your own pump.

Does the campsite have facilities for toilet waste disposal?2024-02-22T02:03:41+00:00

Yes we have a drive over emptying point at the campsite for motorhomes and campervans, which can also be used for portable toilet disposal. Because this waste is treated on site formaldehyde solutions cannot be disposed of here. We sell eco friendly solutions at our campsite shop.

Can I book more than one tent on a single booking?2024-01-18T22:03:38+00:00

Yes you can so long as there are no more than 15 guests. However be aware that one lead guest will be responsible for the booking and all communications from the campsite will be via them. Please make sure all guests are aware of our campsite Rules, especially about the need to be quiet after 11 at night.

What adapter is needed for your electric hookups?2023-01-07T22:50:13+00:00

Our electric hookups (EHUs) use the standard blue 16 amp round C-form plugs. A household plug does not fit directly into the hook-up but will need an adapter for any household appliances. These can be purchased through camping and caravan outlets and online. We recommend a cable length of at least 10m as EHU points are sometimes located centrally. Note you cannot plug high powered devices such as electric heaters or microwaves into the EHUs for tents.

How can I keep fire safe while camping?2023-01-07T22:51:21+00:00

Some simple tips: keep your fire small (on one fire pit only); keep it away from your tent; store unused wood away from the fire; don’t open gas bottles anywhere near your fire. For more useful tips you can check out this useful link …. https://billyoh.com/resource/barbecues-and-bbq-safety

How can you get to the campsite by public transport?2019-01-04T03:45:20+00:00

We recommend use of the website www.travel-cymru for public transport options in Wales.

By bus: In summer Snowdon Sherpa buses drive past the campsite: Caernarfon to Pen-y-Pass (route S4) or Porthmadog to Pen-y-Pass (route S97).  Find the routes and timetables on this link or use www.traveline-cymru to plan your journey.
By train: The nearest train stations are Betws-y-Coed, Porthmadog, and Bangor which has direct London routes. All connect to buses: the Betws-y-Coed to Pen y Pass bus is on route S2, and the bus from Porthmadog is S97. Bangor is the more major sttion with direct trains from London but requires several buses.  Use the link http://www.traveline-cymru.info to find out more.

Do you take organised groups of scouts for example?2024-02-16T22:54:34+00:00

Yes we like to help young people experience the outdoors so we offer a discount for groups of school children, scouts and D of E’s of up to 20 people. If the young people are part of a bone fide organisation that takes responsibility for the group and ensures they respect our rules, you can make a booking from our Youth groups page and take advantage of our youth rate. Please note that we no longer require a group bond in advance for such groups however we do require payment via credit card, ie we no longer accept BACS payments. Please read the details on this page to find out more, and use the button at the bottom to make a booking.

Under what circumstances is a group or behaviour bond withheld?2024-02-16T22:57:53+00:00

When several people get together on the campsite we may ask for a behaviour group bond of £50 per person, which helps us ensure that our Campsite rules are respected, that a group engages in quiet talking only after 11.00 pm, that their pitch is left tidy and also other campers and our staff are respected. We also sometimes require a group bond in advance if we are accepting more than 15 people in a group. Very few bonds are withheld and there is always warning beforehand. For example if a group is noisy after 11 our wardens will give several warnings that behaviour is likely to result in a loss of the bond before it is forfeit. No-one is happy if a bond is withheld so we do our best for this not to happen – but it does need group co-operation as well.  Retained bonds are donated to the Red Cross.

Can I book a pitch?2023-01-07T22:56:05+00:00

We now require bookings for all our campers, including those in vehicles, those in tents wanting electric, and now campers bringing tents who do not need electric hookups (EHU). Book online from our  Booking page and be careful to choose the appropriate pitch: read the details at the top of the page before booking. If you want to camp in a tent and do not need electric hookup then choose “Unallocated pitch”.

Do you offer power hookups?2023-01-07T22:57:01+00:00

We have limited hook-ups for motorhomes, small campervans or tents so these can be booked, see our Booking page for more.

Are campfires allowed?2021-11-09T09:08:05+00:00

Fires are allowed on the campsite, but only if they are from wood purchased from us, and are on one of our steel firepits which protect the grass.

What is the connection between the campsite and Portmeirion?2019-01-04T03:45:21+00:00

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, architect of Portmeirion Village bought the site of the present campsite in the 1930’s to save it from unsuitable development. He gifted a large tract of land above the campsite to the nation (the National Trust) soon after as part of his campaign to start up the Snowdonia National Park. The campsite land and an adjacent farm remain in Sir Clough’s family, and the campsite adheres to his visionary conservation principles.

How far is the nearest pub?2019-01-04T03:45:21+00:00

The Pen y Gwryd hotel is only 2 miles north up the road from the site, on the A498, see our map. You can walk up the old road by turning left at the campsite cattlegrid, a scenic walk that avoids the traffic. This is a cosy pub famous for its use by the Everest climbers. There are several hotels in Beddgelert approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of the site on the A498. The Bryn Tyrch Inn at Capel Curig is a good option for a drink or a (quite pricey) meal.

Is there wifi?2020-08-14T09:12:52+00:00

Yes we do now offer limited (free) wifi. We may later introduce a charge when we can offer a better service.

Is there cellphone reception at the campsite?2023-12-16T00:26:07+00:00

No, none of the cellphone networks have coverage in this area. There are not many places left where you can throw away that mobile! There is phone reception at Beddgelert, 5 miles south of the campsite.  The nearest public phone box open all hours is at Nantgwynant village 2 miles south of the campsite.  Wifi is available in some areas of the campsite, especially near reception and the Cegin. You can use this for Wifi and WhatsApp calling but the bandwidth is not enough for video calls.

How far is the nearest shop?2019-01-04T03:45:21+00:00

We now have a small shop at our reception building on site, see our Shop page. During the weekends and summer holidays we offer wood-fired pizzas on site as well as espresso coffee and breakfasts, see our Food page. Apart form this the nearest shop is Caffi Gwynant at Nantgwynant 2 miles down the road towards Beddgelert, which sells home made food in the old chapel There is also a grocers shop, along with outdoor clothing, craft shops and hotels in Beddgelert, approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of the site on the A498, see our map. Alternatively Llanberis is a larger small town and has a bank, post office and other facilities.

Are motorhomes welcome?2019-04-29T18:09:25+00:00

Yes we do have bays on hard standing for motorhomes (6m – 8m long), all of which have EHU. However as there are not many of these bays it is advisable to book before arriving.  Bookings are online only, and there is a link to the online system on our Bay bookings page. There is a chemical toilet emptying point near the toilet block. Vehicles longer than 8m are not accepted here, except by arrangement in the very low season.

Do you accept caravans?2023-01-07T22:42:30+00:00

I’m sorry but we no longer accept caravans at Llyn Gwynant campsite as our tracks are not suited to them.

How do I pay camping fees?2021-01-23T08:44:10+00:00

We now require advanced bookings from all guests camping here. To check availability and make a booking please go to our Bookings page.

Can I drive to my pitch?2021-01-23T08:59:50+00:00

There are large boulders around the fields to separate cars from campers for safety reasons – we have many children on site so drive with care. Please park nose-in to the stones and camp on the other side. Usually this is very close to where you park though on bank holidays you may have a short walk. Bridge field at the back of the main site is vehicle free, with parking in adjacent carparks. In wet weather or busy bank holidays parts of the site are temporarily closed to vehicles with areas roped off for parking. Please drive very slowly and carefully on the campsite roads.

What are arrival and departure times?2021-01-23T09:03:19+00:00

Arrival is after 2.00 pm and departure is before 11 am. However those booking unallocated camping can purchase a late arrival or early departure, see the campsite Prices page

How can we recharge cameras or phones?2021-01-23T09:05:21+00:00

There are charging points in the campsite laundry but you must not leave your cameras, phones or other small appliances unattended.

Can we re-freeze freezer packs?2015-12-02T20:47:58+00:00

Is the water safe for drinking?2015-12-02T20:46:39+00:00

Yes, all taps on site have water that is treated (by ultraviolet light) and regularly tested by the Council as fit for drinking. Drinking water is available from inside the toilet block, from taps outside at either end of the toilet block including in the dish-washing areas and also from every fire point around the campsite which also has a tap with treated drinking water.

How can I pay at the campsite?2024-02-16T23:03:33+00:00

Camping fees are paid in advance by card from our online booking chart, accessed from the Booking page. Payment on the campsite, in the shop, Cegin or boat hire is by card only.
